U-505 Poem

10 proud British merchant men cruising in a line;

Along came U-505 and then there were nine.

Amfert-Oberlert. zur See

9 proud British merchant men with lookouts not awake,

The U-505 caught one and then there were eight.

Engemann, Obit Ing.

8 proud British steamers at a quarter past eleven,

When we squeeze the firing switch, then there are seven.

Habberg, Lt. zur See

7 British cargo ships loaded to their sticks,

But after our torpedo hits, there were only six.

Schneewind, Ober Lt. zur See

6 proud British freighters running for their lives,

One lagged behind and then there were five.

Wuch, Lt. zur See-U-656

4 proud British steamers were sighted by our crew,

We dive and fire a double shot and then are two.

Boerner, Lit. zur See

2 British freighters a big one and a small,

Loewe shot the big one down so then only one.

Hans chult, Lt. zur See

One little freighter arrived at Portsmouth then,

The BBC and Reuters announced there were ten.

The moral of this story is "Don't believe what your read

in the British papers."

A short poem written by visiting officers from sister ships in U-505's comissioning day guestbook.
